Living a Spirit Filled Life - Pt 8

March 18, 2012 Speaker: Steve Ottolini Series: Living a Spirit Filled Life

Topic: Main Gathering Scripture: 1 Corinthians 13

Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. 9For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. 10But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. 11When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. 12For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.(1 Corinthians 13:8-12 KJV)
Love will never pass away; the time will come when we outgrow prophecy, it will no longer be necessary or appropriate to speak in tongues, we won’t need to gain any more knowledge. For in this life, we can only grow in knowledge of God bit by bit, we speak what we see by revelation of Christ, but it is so fragmentary because we are so limited, our revelation of the ascended Son of Man is incomplete. But when the fullness and completeness of our salvation in Christ as the end of time comes; and our perishable bodies, minds, and tongues put on the imperishable at the resurrection, then the fragmentary, incomplete, inadequate, knowledge we have of God that we express in prophecy and tongues, are useless now that we can see him face to face in our resurrection bodies! (1 Corinthians 13:8-10 Steve Ottolini Translation)

[11] When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. [12] For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known. (1 Corinthians 13:11-12 ESV)

[2] For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body. [3] If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well. [4] Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. [5] So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! [6] And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. [7] For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, [8] but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. [9] With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. [10] From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. [11] Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? [12] Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water. (James 3:2-12 ESV)

Application
1. Speak in Tongues: It communicates the hope of the resurrection to you.

2. Speak in Tongues: It declares that you are God’s own possession and inheritance and that a ‘down payment’ has been made on you.

3. Speak in Tongues: It assures you that God has made a down payment on you and intends on completing his work of the fullness of the image of Christ on the rest of you.
