Exodus - Part 6

October 24, 2010 Speaker: Steve Ottolini Series: Exodus

Topic: Learning Hour

“Lord, because you have made me, I owe you the whole of myself; because you have promised so much, I owe you my whole being. Moreover, I owe you as much more love than myself as you are greater than I, for whom you gave yourself and to whom you promised yourself. I pray you, Lord, make me taste by love what I taste by knowledge; let me know by love what I know by understanding. I owe you more than my whole self, but I have no more, and by myself I cannot render the whole of it to you. Draw me to you, Lord, in the fullness of your love. I am wholly yours by creation; make me all yours, too, in love.” Anselm 1033-1109

• Exodus 25-40: Privilege

A. The Ark of the Covenant
1. Perfect cube: 10x10x10. Solomon’s temple” 20x20x20 a symbol of perfection. This was on Paul’s mind when he speaks of the breadth, height, length and depth of the love of Christ (Ephesians 3:18)

2. Golden cherubim on top, facing on e another with heads down (reverence), wings outstretched (like eagle’s wings) over the mercy seat, touching one another.
3. Cherubim have lion-like body, eagle’s wings and human faces.
4. It is from above the mercy seat, from between the cherubim that the lord will speak to Moses.
5. Exodus 25:22 “There I will meet with you, and from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim that are on the ark of the testimony, I will speak with you about all that I will give you in commandment for the people of Israel.”
6. Numbers 7:89 “And when Moses went into the tent of meeting to speak with the LORD, he heard the voice speaking to him from above the mercy seat that was on the ark of the testimony, from between the two cherubim; and it spoke to him.”
7. The Lord is referred to as being ‘enthroned’ upon the cherubim.
(a) Psalm 80:1 “Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, you who lead Joseph like a flock! You who are enthroned upon the cherubim, shine forth.”
(b) 1 Samuel 4:4 “So the people sent to Shiloh and brought from there the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, who is enthroned on the cherubim. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.”
(c) 2 Samuel 6:2 “And David arose and went with all the people who were with him from Baale-judah to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the name of the LORD of hosts who sits enthroned on the cherubim.”
(d) Isaiah 37:16 “O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, enthroned above the cherubim, you are the God, you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; you have made heaven and earth.”
(e) John 20:12 “...and she saw 2 angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain (on a slab) one at the head and one at the feet.”

C. Paul referring to Tabernacle procedure.
1. Hebrews 4:16 “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

II. The Priesthood – Exodus 28-29 See figure 1
A. 7 Articles:
1. Breastplate
2. Ephod
3. Robe
4. Coat
5. Linen Breeches
6. Mitre
7. Crown
Garments to be for glory and beauty. Exodus 28:2 “And you shall make holy garments for Aaron your brother, for glory and for beauty.”

B. Breastplate: 12 precious jewels four rows of each bearing the 12 names of the tribes of Israel. Breastplate is over the heart.

C. Ephod: Two onyx stones in sockets of gold on priests shoulders with 6 names of tribes on one shoulder and 6 tribes on the other.

D. High Priest: Representative of all the people. Exodus 29: 38-46 “Now this is what you shall offer on the altar: two lambs a year old day by day regularly. One lamb you shall offer in the morning, and the other lamb you shall offer at twilight. And with the first lamb a tenth seah of fine flour mingled with a fourth of a hin of beaten oil, and a fourth of a hin of wine for a drink offering. The other lamb you shall offer at twilight, and shall offer with it a grain offering and its drink offering, as in the morning, for a pleasing aroma, a food offering to the LORD. It shall be a regular burnt offering throughout your generations at the entrance of the tent of meeting before the LORD, where I will meet with you, to speak to you there. There I will meet with the people of Israel, and it shall be sanctified by my glory. I will consecrate the tent of meeting and the altar. Aaron also and his sons I will consecrate to serve me as priests. I will dwell among the people of Israel and will be their God. And they shall know that I am the LORD their God, who brought them out of the land of Egypt that I might dwell among them. I am the LORD their God.”
Exodus 28:29 “So Aaron shall bear the names of the sons of Israel in the breastpiece of judgment on his heart, when he goes into the Holy Place, to bring them to regular remembrance before the LORD.”
In the high priest the nation of Israel is accepted by the Lord as holy.

E. The Crown: Inscription reads ‘holiness unto the Lord.’ All imperfections and sins are transformed into holiness unto the Lord by the high priest. Our high priest wore a crown, and our names were on His shoulders and over His heart.

A. Exodus 40:34 “Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.”
Exodus 3:10 “Come, I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.”
